How often do you and your partner joke around with each other? It could be in small ways, like giggling about the way they just said something or roasting them about their mismatched socks. Whichever way you and your boo choose to go about it, the banter could help strengthen your bond.
According to research done at Appalachian State University, making fun of your partner on a regular basis can help you all grow closer. But make sure you keep it light so that no one gets offended.
“Make sure that not only your personalities mesh, but your humors do too—so no one takes offense, feels hurt, or gets defensive,” says celebrity dating coach and podcast host of Man Whisperer, Laurel House told Cosmo.
One way to keep your slight roasting from venturing into “hurt feeling” category is by playing on your partner’s quirks.
“When you roast each other’s quirks, you are effectively pointing out the little, sometimes ignored sides to your personalities,” says House. “Those quirks tend to be the things that you love the most about your partner.”
That’s one of the beautiful things about love–you find parts of your partner that no one knows about and can poke fun at it while simultaneously adoring it.
“If you ask the roaster what they find most attractive about their partner, there’s a good chance it could be the exact same thing that they roast them over,” House explained.
Beyond just roasting your bae about the things that make them adorable, you can also strategically use humor to bring up issues in the relationship. This has to be done nicely and in a way that’s truly funny, otherwise you’re walking on thin ice.
“Bringing up problems in this fashion helps you to softly address the hard stuff. Often times, just by shedding light on an issue can let your partner know you’re not into it,” says House
